It was the coldest day of the year, at a very brisk 2 degrees celsius outside. Mike and I were doing slow laps around the local footy oval, covered up in multple layers. This was the first time I had ever run continuously, for more than 5 minutes. I was tired. I was hurting. I was wondering why I was doing this.
Our breath was steaming in the chill air and communication had been reduced to meaningful grunts. Mike, a long time experienced runner, was exhorting me to keep on going, keep on moving.
Up until that point, I don’t think I’d ever run more than a continual kilometer in my life and Mike, whilst encouraging, was, he admits, a good few helpings of pudding past his prime of the “lean, mean fighting machine” of old.
This pain we were going through, muscles complaining, hearts pounding, analysing the point of it all, was like a dare, a dare sweetened with the goal of entering our first adventure race in October, 4 months hence.
We both wanted to get our base fitness up, myself continuing to search for that elusive “zone” much lauded in the websites and journals I had scoured in my thirst of all knowledge adventure racing.
Suddenly the ensuing months had me thinking that I was surrounded by runners who were akin to gazelles, mountain bikers who didn’t know the meaning of fear and swimmers who moved like fish – your general all round bunch of super athletes.
It was all a bit daunting really.
However, Mike and others continued to offer encouragment, keeping me focussed on my goal, keeping me moving. We only did it together, with one thing in mind.
We stayed strong, we stayed on target.
